Hundreds of fans lined the streets of a Welsh coastal town on Saturday to bid farewell to the late singer Bonnie Tyler as her coffin was brought back home. The Grammy-nominated Welsh pop star, beloved worldwide for her ballad “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” passed away last month in a hospital in Portugal. She was 75.

Tyler was hospitalized in May in Faro, where she had a home, for emergency intestinal surgery. Neighbors and fans from across the UK and beyond gathered in Mumbles, near the city of Swansea, to watch the hearse carrying her coffin, draped with a Welsh flag. Dozens waited outside the singer’s former home or left floral tributes there.

“She always came back home, always returned to her fans in Wales,” said Carys Edwards, 18. “Her songs touched many people here in Wales; we loved her very much.”

Tyler was born Gaynor Hopkins, daughter of a coal miner, in public housing with an outdoor bathroom in Skewen, Wales, about seven miles from Swansea. She grew up with three sisters and two brothers.

The singer received three Grammy nominations and in 2013 represented Britain in the Eurovision Song Contest, finishing 19th. Queen Elizabeth II honored her in 2022 as a Member of the Order of the British Empire for her services to music, primarily due to “Total Eclipse of the Heart.”

The ballad topped the charts in both Britain and the United States and has surpassed one billion streams, boosted by real eclipses in 2017 and 2024, as well as during last week’s solar eclipse. Tyler was also known for other hits such as “It’s a Heartache” and “Holding Out For a Hero” from the soundtrack of the movie “Footloose.”

A ceremony celebrating Tyler’s life will take place on Monday for family and friends at a church in Swansea, before the singer takes a final journey through her hometown of Skewen.
