An explosive device detonated outside a federal building in Lower Manhattan on Monday morning, leading to the arrest of a suspect, according to police sources.

The incident took place at 26 Federal Plaza. This location houses several agencies such as the FBI, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services.

Authorities responded swiftly to the explosion noise at the building’s entrance. They discovered a man equipped with an airsoft rifle, carbon dioxide cartridges, halogen lighting, and a helmet, according to multiple law enforcement sources.

Preliminary reports suggest that fireworks, placed in a garbage can, were responsible for the explosion, senior security sources informed CBS News.

The fire department quickly arrived to extinguish the flames, and law enforcement detained a man at the scene.

Official statements indicate this assault was an anti-ICE attack. Witnesses confirmed the presence of heavy smoke outside 26 Federal Plaza following the explosion caused by fireworks.

Initial information revealed the suspect possessed two realistic-looking firearms, either BB guns or airsoft guns. One of these appeared to be a long gun and was seen in a grocery cart, law enforcement sources informed CBS News.

Reports confirmed that no firearms were discharged during the incident. Video footage captured heavy smoke in front of the building and authorities apprehending a man.

As a result of the incident, police have warned of potential traffic delays, mass transit disruptions, and road closures near Worth Street and Lafayette Street. Authorities advise avoiding the area if possible.
