Epic Games’ Unreal Engine: Transforming Disney’s Entertainment

Imagine a pirate’s transformation from flesh to bone as he holds cursed gold, or Han Solo’s Millennium Falcon cruising through the deserts of Tatooine to the skyscrapers of Coruscant. These scenes share a common technology with the online game ‘Fortnite’ — Epic Games’ Unreal Engine. This engine has increasingly become integral to Walt Disney Co.’s operations, from ‘The Mandalorian’ to theme park rides and even online games within ‘Fortnite.’

Unreal Engine’s Integration with Disney

Disney’s executive vice president, Sean Shoptaw, highlighted the merging of park experiences with immersive game worlds. The synergy is evident in the connection between the Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run ride and the ‘Smugglers Gambit’ virtual game in ‘Fortnite.’ This collaboration reflects Disney’s strategy to engage fans deeply in their favorite stories, leveraging Disney’s strong intellectual property.

The partnership strengthened in 2024 when Disney invested $1.5 billion in Epic Games for a minority stake, focusing on creating a Disney games universe interoperating with ‘Fortnite.’ Despite challenges at Epic Games, this initiative remains a priority, especially under the guidance of current CEO Josh D’Amaro. He regards the collaboration with Epic Games as a vital part of Disney’s digital expansion, attracting new audiences, particularly the younger demographic.

Expanding the Uses of Unreal Engine

Epic’s Unreal Engine provides real-time 3D graphics technology, initially designed for gaming but now used across various industries. Disney applies it widely, from film and TV production to attractions like the Pirates of the Caribbean ride, where a new audio-animatronic pirate’s facial expressions use Unreal Engine. Walt Disney Imagineering appreciates Unreal Engine’s capability to create dynamic, immersive experiences, improving attractions and reinforcing audience engagement.

The latest Unreal Engine 5, released in 2021, offers enhanced graphics quality, catching Hollywood’s eye. Shows like ‘The Mandalorian’ have adopted this technology, using virtual sets displayed on LED screens to film extensive parts without location shoots. This approach revolutionizes media production, allowing seamless integration of complex visual effects.

Transforming Entertainment

Bill Clifford, Epic’s senior vice president of the Unreal Ecosystem, emphasized extending intellectual property into interactive experiences. This approach sees films, games, and attractions become interconnected, offering audiences innovative entertainment options. Examples include Disneyland’s Pirates of the Caribbean ride, using Unreal Engine to create lifelike audio-animatronic figures, enhancing guest experiences and encouraging repeat visits.

The Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run has utilized Unreal Engine since 2019, rendering vivid landscapes that evolve as participants steer Han Solo’s ship. Linking this attraction with ‘Smugglers Gambit’ in ‘Fortnite’ broadens engagement, offering in-game rewards reflecting performance in the park ride. This cross-media initiative marks a significant leap in providing interactive, immersive experiences previously unattainable.

Epic’s Clifford noted that guests might start a story in Disney parks and continue it in the game, blending traditional and digital experiences. This strategy opens new horizons, crafting interconnected entertainment for consumers.
