At 90, Engelbert Humperdinck has crafted an unconventional workout routine, attributing it to his vitality and enduring performance career. Known as the ‘King of Romance,’ the British singer discussed his exercise regimen during a recent appearance on ‘The Jim Masters Show.’
Humperdinck explained, ‘I walk out in the pool all day. I do my martial art moves underwater, making it more effective. That’s how I stay alive and keep going, maintaining fitness for audiences to see me respectfully.’
Despite his age, Humperdinck continues to perform regularly, with concert dates planned into 2027. An upcoming album, ‘Faithfully,’ set for release on August 28, includes his versions of songs by Journey, the Cars, KISS, and Aerosmith, featuring several guest artists.
While focusing on keeping physically fit, Humperdinck’s music has reached younger audiences. His 1968 song ‘A Man Without Love’ featured in Marvel Studios’ ‘Moon Knight,’ drawing new fans.
‘Since ‘Man Without Love,’ it’s triggered something,’ he said. ‘People focus on the music rather than age. I strive to stay young.’
Personal circumstances also add depth to his performances. Since his wife Patricia’s death in 2021, Humperdinck’s love songs hold a more profound significance. Married for 57 years, Patricia was instrumental during the early years of his career. She managed their family life while he toured extensively.
‘She was the backbone of my life,’ he shared. ‘In the early years, when I made it in the industry, she raised our children alone during my long absences.’
Despite bittersweet ballads, Humperdinck finds joy in performing them today. ‘Walking on stage gives an unmatched feeling,’ he expressed. ‘Though it’s reality coming through, I interpret lyrics differently now. It’s sincere.’
He stated, ‘I’m a ballad singer, and I cherish singing romantic ballads. They unite hearts.’
As he continues his career, Humperdinck hopes his music legacy endures.
‘Music is timeless, and I see past hits still being viewed.’ he remarked. ‘That’s the legacy I want. To leave a good taste behind.’
