Emergency Efforts to Prevent Disaster at Aerospace Facility

Emergency crews launched a crucial operation overnight at a Southern California aerospace facility to manage a chemical tank at risk. The internal temperature of a critical tank reached 90 degrees Fahrenheit. This situation prompted Gov. Gavin Newsom to declare a state of emergency Saturday and to evacuate over 40,000 residents.

Incident Commander Greg Covey from the Orange County Fire Authority reported concerning news Saturday morning. Teams manually checked the tank’s temperature, obscured from drone view by cooling water. The temperature rose from 77 to 90 degrees since Friday morning.

Fire Authority Interim Chief T.J. McGovern and Covey warned of two possible catastrophic outcomes. The tank may spill 6,000-7,000 gallons of hazardous chemicals or undergo a thermal runaway and explode, potentially igniting nearby tanks.

The primary goal was to neutralize a 15,000-gallon tank to prevent an explosion if the neighboring smaller tank detonates. Despite the increasing temperature, officials explored a potential third outcome using a heavy water spray to slow the chemical’s hardening. This method aims to control the pressure and prevent an explosion.

Crews made contingency plans in case of tank failure. They prepared measures to divert any spills into a commercial holding area, preventing chemicals from entering storm drains, river channels, or the ocean.

Gov. Newsom’s declaration allows resources to assist the response. The Office of Emergency Services has mobilized, providing support and safety measures.

The emergency began Thursday night following a leak of methyl methacrylate (MMA) at GKN Aerospace’s Garden Grove facility, which creates engine parts for aircraft. Firefighters initially controlled the situation, but the crisis escalated by Friday morning.

A ‘water curtain’ temporarily stabilized the tank’s temperature as experts explored solutions. Expanded evacuation zones ensure public safety amid the threat. Health officials, including Dr. Regina Chinsio-Kwong, warned of severe risks if the tank ruptures, highlighting the danger of toxic vapor impacting respiratory health.

Rep. Derek Tran confirmed ongoing monitoring of the situation in collaboration with local officials and federal disaster agencies. Emergency management teams remain vigilant as response efforts continue.
