Egypt coach Hossam Hassan said Friday that the situation with a Dallas police officer was resolved after an incident at the team’s hotel. The confrontation happened the day before Egypt defeated Australia in the round of 32 at the FIFA World Cup.
Video footage from Thursday shows Hossam Hassan and team director Ibrahim Hassan arguing with a police officer. The altercation was a result of a player preparing to take a photo with a young fan in the hotel lobby. After the officer approached Hossam Hassan, the situation escalated with Ibrahim Hassan engaging in a shoving match. Ibrahim seemed upset by the officer’s intervention. Fans had gathered at the hotel to meet players for autographs and photographs before the match.
Police Statement on the Incident
The Dallas police issued a statement explaining that the officers responded to hotel security’s request regarding an individual without credentials trying to access the venue. The issue was resolved on-site, and police met with Egyptian officials to discuss the concerns.
“We are really happy to be here at this tournament and we are satisfied with the security personnel that are accompanying us,” said Hossam Hassan through a translator.
Hossam Hassan did not provide further details on the confrontation or comment on the officer’s behavior during a brief news conference. The Dallas Police Department confirmed no arrests or injuries were reported.
Hassan’s Historical Role
Hossam Hassan began leading Egypt in 2024, guiding the team through qualifications into the World Cup. This was his first public statement on the hotel incident since the video emerged. Egypt’s players chose not to comment on the incident during Friday’s press briefing. Hassan is notably the first individual to both play and coach for Egypt at the World Cup. The team’s victory over Australia marked Egypt’s debut in the tournament’s knockout round.
Ibrahim Hassan, who is Hossam’s twin brother, serves as the team director. Both shared long careers as defenders for the national team before transitioning into coaching and administrative roles.
Security Challenges During the Tournament
Issues with U.S security or law enforcement have occurred for World Cup delegations before, including Egypt. The conflict reportedly began with fans, many of whom were children, attempting to get photos with players, a common scene at team hotels.
