Dusty May Takes Over as Dallas Mavericks Head Coach

Dusty May has accepted the role of head coach for the Dallas Mavericks, marking a significant event in the NBA offseason. May transitions from his previous position with the Michigan Wolverines, following the firing of Jason Kidd. In Dallas, May will have the opportunity to work with a talented roster that includes Cooper Flagg and Kyrie Irving.

The decision to join the Mavericks was influenced by the alignment with the team’s front office and ownership. May expressed excitement about working with the young talent of Cooper Flagg alongside one of the top point guards, Kyrie Irving.

May’s move comes after his success with the Wolverines, leading them to a 2026 national championship. His tenure at Michigan concluded with an impressive 64-13 record, establishing him as a standout in the coaching realm.

His coaching journey gained attention following his leadership at Florida Atlantic, which resulted in a Final Four appearance in 2023. He then took over the Wolverines in 2024, securing a 124-26 record over four seasons and solidifying their status as a powerhouse in college basketball.

With May’s departure, Michigan faces the task of finding a new head coach. The team boasts talent like Final Four Most Outstanding Player Elliot Cadeau and rising star Trey McKenney, as well as notable transfers. NCAA rules will allow players to reassess their situations once a new coach is appointed.

The Dallas Mavericks ended the previous season with a 26-56 record. They hold the 9th and 30th picks in the first round of the 2026 NBA Draft, presenting opportunities for further team development.
