Tampa Bay Rays shortstop Wander Franco has been declared criminally responsible for the abuse of a minor. However, a Dominican judge ruled he will not serve a sentence. This decision was made on Monday.
Judge José Antonio Núñez stated that Franco was a victim of extortion and blackmail by the minor’s mother. She has been sentenced to 10 years for trafficking her daughter. Núñez explained the contradiction in declaring criminal responsibility while exempting Franco from punishment due to a judicial pardon. The judge cited “logical and legal reasoning” for this decision.
After the ruling, Franco expressed gratitude as he hugged his family in court. Franco was arrested in January 2024 following accusations of a four-month relationship with a 14-year-old girl. He was accused of transferring money to her mother for consent. While facing charges of exploitation and trafficking, he was previously found not guilty.
Franco left the courthouse with his lawyer, Teodosio Jáquez. Franco told reporters he felt calm and encouraged fans to support him. He mentioned his lawyers had likely been in contact with the Rays despite no personal contact.
Major League Baseball released a statement acknowledging the verdict. They plan to conclude their investigation in due course. Jáquez noted they do not yet have the physical sentence but emphasized Franco’s exemption due to his victim status and judicial pardon. Full sentencing details are expected on June 16.
Franco’s 11-year contract with the Rays, signed in 2021, was in jeopardy after the Dominican authorities’ investigation began in 2023. Following his arrest, he was placed on the restricted list, affecting his pay.
