Dolton Village Board members have voted to implement a new curfew, effective immediately, following several large youth gatherings during the summer. The curfew now requires anyone under 18 to have adult supervision from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. daily. This marks a shift from the previous curfew, which varied between weekdays and weekends. Violations will incur fines ranging from $250 to $2,500.

Police Chief Jeffrey Chapman reported that these gatherings, often termed ‘teen takeovers,’ involved up to 600 participants. Although major incidents have not been reported, officers encountered serious issues, including gunfire and the recovery of an assault rifle from a minor.

Mayor Jason House expressed support for the new curfew and penalties, commending police efforts to address the gatherings effectively. House emphasized flexibility for police in enforcement strategies, particularly during large events, and described the measure as a vehicle to assist police in maintaining order.

The decision was unanimously approved by the Village Board. The move follows similar actions by surrounding areas, where community leaders continue to debate responses to teen gatherings. Blue Island recently introduced an ordinance holding parents financially responsible for damage caused by their children during such events. Other cities, including Chicago, are exploring different approaches such as job programs and city-sponsored events.

In Dolton, police were aware of plans for several gatherings this year, five of which occurred. Notices were distributed in some cases to warn potential participants of the risks involved. Despite the challenges, Dolton police have managed to handle these situations professionally.

While many involved in these gatherings were from outside the village, Chief Chapman noted that local youth rarely participated, suggesting that local teenagers have other activities keeping them occupied.
