In Game 3 of the National League Division Series, the Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the Atlanta Braves 3-1, taking a 2-1 lead in the best-of-five series. Despite initial plans to diversify their scoring methods, the Dodgers relied on home runs and stellar pitching to secure the win.
Early Game Struggles
The Dodgers attempted to capitalize on opportunities in the first inning, as Mookie Betts reached base on a soft groundball. Teoscar Hernández also got on base due to a fielding error by Braves shortstop Ha-Seong Kim. However, with runners on base, Shohei Ohtani struck out, failing to bring in any runs.
In the second inning, Kyle Tucker singled to left and stole second base after multiple pick-off attempts by Braves ace Chris Sale. Despite his strategy, the inning ended with Kiké Hernández striking out, leaving Tucker stranded. All six Dodgers’ outs in the first two innings were strikeouts.
The Turning Point
In the third inning, Mookie Betts doubled, and Freddie Freeman appeared ready to turn the momentum with a deep hit to left field. Yet, Braves’ left fielder Mauricio Dubón made a remarkable catch. Nonetheless, the Dodgers persisted.
A critical moment came when Kiké Hernández hit a two-run home run with Andy Pages on base. Following suit, Freeman hit another home run, this time sending an inside sinker over the right-field fence.
Yamamoto’s Pitching Performance
Dodgers’ pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto delivered a strong performance, limiting the Braves to four hits and one run over seven innings. He demonstrated control from the start, retiring 10 of the first 11 batters.
Yamamoto faced a challenge in the fifth inning but managed to escape after loading the bases and allowing one run. He remained composed, preventing further damage and not allowing any more baserunners in his remaining innings.
Relief Pitching Secures Victory
Left-handed reliever Tanner Scott maintained the momentum by delivering a hitless eighth inning. Right-hander Edwin Díaz saved the game, despite giving up a double to Ozzie Albies at the start of the ninth. Díaz retired the next three batters to seal the victory.
