Djokovic Discusses Health After Unexpected Cincinnati Open Exit

Novak Djokovic, the celebrated tennis champion, faced an unexpected defeat at the Cincinnati Open on Saturday. In the second round, he lost to Thiago Agustín Tirante, a 25-year-old rising star. Djokovic’s performance was hindered by visible discomfort, and he required a medical timeout after appearing to vomit during the match.

The match extended for close to three hours before Tirante bested the veteran player, marking a significant moment in his career. For Djokovic, it was a challenging loss. He referred to the match as “not enjoyable” during the post-game press conference.

“It’s just a condition that I have, healthwise, that has been bothering me for the past couple of years,” Djokovic explained. “A lot of issues, especially when it is humid and it is hot.”

Djokovic, 39, did not specify the health issue but noted that conditions such as humidity exacerbate it. He mentioned nerves as another contributing factor to his difficulties on the court.

After the match, Djokovic congratulated Tirante. The young player expressed admiration for Djokovic, acknowledging the significance of his victory. He managed the challenge of facing a legendary figure, securing a win in 2 hours and 44 minutes with a scoreline of 2-6, 6-4, 6-4.

Djokovic’s history at the Cincinnati Open includes a remarkable record of achievement, but the recent loss altered his standing to 45 wins and 13 losses according to the ATP Tour. When questioned about future participation at the tournament, Djokovic seemed doubtful.

“I certainly hope so, but it looks more likely not, unfortunately,” Djokovic stated. “But let’s see what the future brings.”

This Cincinnati Open marked Djokovic’s return since his Wimbledon defeat by Italy’s Jannik Sinner in July. Prior to this, he withdrew from the Canadian Open, probably as a strategic move to prepare for the U.S. Open, starting August 30. Djokovic is a four-time champion of this prestigious Grand Slam event.
