The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has requested that Florida officials transfer Akbor Miah, a Bangladeshi illegal immigrant, into federal custody after his state criminal proceedings conclude. Miah is accused of murdering his sister-in-law, having been deported under the Trump administration, reentering the U.S. illegally, and released by the Biden administration.

According to DHS, Miah, also known as Shahidul Islam, first entered the U.S. in 2016. ICE arrested him in February 2018, and a judge issued a removal order later that year. He was deported to Bangladesh in January 2019, but he reentered the U.S. illegally, which is a federal crime. In March 2022, the Biden administration released him into the U.S.

Murder Charges in Florida

Authorities accuse Miah of fatally shooting Monica Islam in May 2025 in Lake County, Florida. Investigators say he fled to New York after the incident. U.S. Marshals arrested him, and he was extradited to Florida. Miah faces a first-degree murder charge and prosecutors are seeking the death penalty.

Monica Islam was last seen leaving a Eustis convenience store with Miah on May 2, 2025. Later, she was found dead from a gunshot wound along a road in Mount Dora. Prosecutors found Monica’s DNA in Miah’s vehicle and a bullet in the car’s door.

ICE Detainer and Law Enforcement Efforts

ICE has lodged a detainer to take custody of Miah after his state proceedings. DHS officials underscored the cooperation with law enforcement partners to capture Miah, who attempted to evade justice by fleeing to New York, a sanctuary state.

State Attorney Bill Gladson reported that Miah made suspicious online searches before the killing. Gladson updated the public on the case during a news conference and mentioned the joint effort of local, state, and federal agencies in tracking Miah.
