Deshaun Watson made a notable return to the field for the Cleveland Browns during a preseason game against the Chicago Bears. This marked his first NFL action since 2024. The game was significant because Watson had been recovering from two Achilles tears suffered in 2024 and early 2025.

Although his performance wasn’t perfect, Watson’s presence on the field was a victory itself. He played for one half and faced competition from fellow quarterbacks Shedeur Sanders and Dillon Gabriel. While Watson’s play was neither exceptional nor poor, he showed more competence compared to Sanders and Gabriel. Watson described his outing as “definitely a good moment for myself.”

Watson’s stats included completing 11 of 15 passes. The Browns managed to score with him in the game, which was a positive sign. Despite a fumble that marred his otherwise solid start, Watson appeared confident in his abilities. “I don’t doubt myself in any way that I can’t play at a high level,” he stated.

Head coach Todd Monken expressed enthusiasm about Watson’s performance, praising his hard work and ability to return to the field. Monken said, “I mean, it was so cool to watch him play…he was having fun today.”

In contrast, Sanders and Gabriel struggled. Both threw interceptions and faced difficulties against backup players. Watson’s competition for the starting job seems to be less intense, given Sanders finished with a 39.6 passer rating and Gabriel with a 27.1. Sanders also had a fumbled snap that disrupted their momentum.

Monken announced that Sanders will start against the Buffalo Bills next week and play the first half, followed by Watson in the third quarter and Gabriel in the fourth. The battle for the starting quarterback position for the Browns remains ongoing but Watson’s return adds a fascinating dynamic to the team.
