Democrats are working to prevent Maureen Galindo, a candidate accused of antisemitic comments, from advancing in a contested U.S. House race. The race is occurring in San Antonio, Texas, where Galindo has gained attention.
House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries claims Republicans may be backing Galindo to harm Democratic prospects in the upcoming elections. Two Jewish House members have promised to vote daily to expel her if she wins a congressional seat.
Galindo, a progressive and a sex therapist with limited political experience, made headlines for suggesting an immigration detention center should be converted into “a prison for American Zionists.” She clarified that she did not mean all Jewish people should be incarcerated. In a text to The New York Times, Galindo stated, “Everything is based off a local journalist twisting words. I have always called for all detention centers to be closed.”
Despite discussions in Washington and online, the primary runoff has attracted less attention in Texas’s 35th congressional district. On the last day of early voting, many voters were either unaware of the controversy or did not know the details surrounding Galindo.
