Democratic Primary Victory Sets Stage for November Election in Colorado

Jessica Killin emerged victorious in the Democratic primary for Colorado’s 5th Congressional District, preparing for a clash with current Representative Jeff Crank, R-Colo., this November. The district, which includes Colorado Springs and El Paso County, is gearing up for a competitive race. Killin, a newcomer with experience as an Army captain and former chief of staff to Doug Emhoff, outperformed Joe Reagan, an Army veteran and nonprofit leader.

Reagan previously competed for the seat in 2024, leveraging his military service and community work. Killin enters the race with significant national support and robust fundraising efforts. Crank, unopposed in the Republican primary, seeks a second term, representing a district with a strong military presence.

Progressive momentum faces challenges as a seasoned Democrat withstands competition in Colorado.

The district’s evolving political landscape has drawn attention. Historically Republican, it’s showing signs of shifting. Trump’s victory margin in El Paso County decreased from 22 points in 2016 to 10 points in 2024, highlighting the district’s changing dynamics.

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) has included Killin in its Red to Blue program, marking the race as a potential opportunity to flip a GOP-leaning seat. Despite this, the Republicans maintain a hold on the area.

Jeff Crank, the incumbent, has a background rooted in politics and business. He worked on Capitol Hill for seven years, became Vice President of the Colorado Springs Chamber of Commerce, and led Americans for Prosperity. Crank also hosts The Jeff Crank Show and the American Potential Podcast.

Killin’s political stance aligns with centrist Democratic values. She emphasized fiscal responsibility, public safety, and secure borders, distancing herself from more socialist-leaning factions of the party. She stated that Democratic Socialists of America should not represent the party, as covered by local news.

As the election approaches, the dynamics within this pivotal district will continue to unfold, with both parties vying for control.
