Deadly Train Attack in Quetta, Pakistan

At least 23 individuals lost their lives and approximately 70 sustained injuries due to a severe attack on a passenger train in Pakistan, as per The Associated Press.

Details of the Attack

On Sunday morning, a suicide bomber’s assault rocked Quetta, the capital of the southwestern Balochistan province. The explosion occurred when a vehicle filled with explosives detonated near a railway line. This happened as a passenger train was passing by, causing two train cars to overturn and ignite in flames. The area has a history of ongoing insurgency involving separatist and militant factions.

The Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA), a militant group seeking the province’s separation from Pakistan, claimed responsibility. The group indicated it targeted a train transporting security personnel.

A report from The Times of India noted the train carried army personnel and their families traveling from Quetta to Peshawar for the Eid holidays. AP stated that the BLA confirmed an attack on a train transporting security members. The region is notable for its substantial security presence.

Impact and Reactions

The explosion sent ripples through the surrounding area, according to witness reports and images shared on social media. The force resulted in two train vehicles capsizing and catching fire, releasing thick smoke into the air. Nearby infrastructures suffered considerable damage, and more than a dozen parked cars were affected.

Many victims received treatment at local hospitals. Of those injured, doctors cited by The AP reported that about 20 remained in critical condition.

Official Responses

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif vehemently condemned the attack, labeling it a “cowardly act of terrorism.” He insisted that justice would be served.

“I strongly condemn the heinous bomb explosion near Chaman Phatak, Quetta, which has resulted in the tragic loss of innocent lives and left many others injured. Such cowardly acts of terrorism cannot weaken the resolve of the people of Pakistan. We remain steadfast in our determination to eliminate terrorism in all its forms and manifestations,” he stated.

Sharif sent his sympathies to the victims’ families and wished a swift recovery for the wounded. He assured national solidarity with Balochistan during this challenging time.

Balochistan’s Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti alleged Indian-sponsored proxies supported the group, aiming to destabilize Pakistan. India has consistently denied such allegations.

“The terrorists of Fitna Al-Hindustan are proving their savagery by targeting innocent civilians, women, and children,” Bugti said, describing the group as “evil originating from India.” He assured that no refuge would remain for terrorists in Balochistan, committing to pursue them to justice.

Escalating Threats

BLA has increasingly orchestrated large-scale suicide attacks against Pakistani security entities and infrastructure in Quetta, as per The Times of India. In 2024, a suicide bombing at a Balochistan train station resulted in at least 26 fatalities, including soldiers.
