Darrell Mattison: Dominant Force on Morgan Park’s Football Field

Morgan Park’s Darrell Mattison faces every football thrown his way as a challenge. This senior free safety excels at proving his prowess and delivering results on the field. The Ole Miss recruit applies an unwavering focus. “I’m a ball hawk out there, preventing quarterbacks from executing plays,” Mattison explained. “I might not be violent by nature, but my gameplay is aggressive and I’m quite vocal. Off the field, I’m loud and humorous.”

However, opponents find no humor in his presence. Leading the Mustangs, Mattison recorded six tackles, two pass breakups, and two deflections in a 26-10 nonconference triumph over Niles Notre Dame at Rockne Stadium, Chicago. Junior quarterback Ronald Smith Jr. contributed three touchdown passes for Morgan Park, now holding a 1-1 record, while senior running back Will Smith Jr. added a 40-yard touchdown run.

Mattison demonstrated why he ranks among the country’s top defensive backs. His crucial tackle at the 5-yard line thwarted a potential score from Notre Dame, preserving the Mustangs’ 18-10 lead in the fourth quarter. Morgan Park then forced four incomplete passes to secure victory.

“He’s exceptional,” Ronald Smith stated regarding Mattison. “He adds spectacular plays to our team on both offense and defense. If you pass against us, he’ll seize the ball. Having a player like him is invaluable.”

“He hit the genetic lottery,” Morgan Park coach Chris James commented. “He’s athletically gifted, exhibiting rare skills, elite ball skills, and extensive range. Fearless on the field, Mattison is improving continually.”

Ronald Smith acknowledged how Mattison’s SEC recruitment sparked admiration among teammates. “It’s rare for local schools to have such opportunities,” Smith noted. Completing his senior year at semester’s end, Mattison plans to join Ole Miss in January, following his early June commitment.

“Playing in the SEC always felt right,” Mattison expressed fulfillment of his aspirations. “The coaches and environment were perfect. Joining the SEC is a wise decision.”

Standing at 6-foot-2 and weighing 165 pounds, Mattison boasts a combination of superior size, agility, and athleticism. Operating as the secondary’s deep back, he scans the entire field for Morgan Park, yet retains the liberty to adjust his position as needed.

“I analyze everything, positioning teammates accordingly,” Mattison explained. “It’s effortless to grasp the entire field’s dynamics.”

Mattison initially aspired to be a receiver, mirroring his coach James, who excelled in that role during college at Illinois. Yet, an unforeseen position change in a lower-level game in his sophomore year redirected his path.

“I was playing receiver during this JV game, suddenly switched to safety,” he recalled. “Immediately, making interceptions and plays felt natural. Ball skills were already there, revealing a new potential.”

As the eldest of four siblings, Mattison embodies leadership and ambition. He actively coaches his 6-year-old brother’s youth team. Will Smith highlighted Mattison’s mischievous personality, which energizes the team.

Though his family favored basketball, Darrell Mattison was drawn to football’s intense physicality. His playful demeanor shifts to serious focus during games. “This field allows me to vent my frustration,” he remarked. “I’d rather express it here than elsewhere. When opposing teams taunt me and I remain silent, that’s when they’re fearful.”
