OutKick initially reported that ESPN planned to let Ryan Clark go, sparking controversy within the sports media. According to OutKick reporter Bobby Burack, ESPN reacted by pulling Clark off-air and released the news via The Athletic, aiming to control the narrative. Jemele Hill and Le Batard subsequently criticized OutKick, with Le Batard focusing on racial aspects and calling their reporting a “perpetual grift.”

Le Batard argued that ESPN, labeled “too woke,” was shedding Black personalities and diverse voices. He further commented that the network was increasingly run by White individuals. While Le Batard called OutKick’s reporting “dishonest,” he provided no evidence for these claims.

ESPN’s decision to part ways with Clark after an 11-year tenure was met with criticism from sports media, portraying ESPN as the villain and Clark as the victim. Le Batard questioned ESPN’s motives, suggesting embarrassment was intended for Clark.

OutKick defended its reporting practices, noting any corrections made have been routine for media outlets. The outlet prides itself on questioning mainstream narratives, emphasizing a diverse range of opinions against “woke” activism. The founder claims OutKick is focused on serving the broader American sports fan rather than elite interests.
