Dairy Palace Shines in ‘Trash Mountain’ Movie at Festivals

Tinley Park’s Dairy Palace gained new attention last month, featuring as a filming location in the movie “Trash Mountain.” The film debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival.

Kevin Hoffmeister, owner of Dairy Palace, shared his excitement about his business being part of a movie set. “It was a lot of fun,” he remarked. The film is scheduled for screenings at the Chicago International Film Festival. Viewers can catch it at AMC NEWCITY 14 in Lincoln Park on October 23 at 5:15 p.m. and at the Chicago History Museum on October 24 at 3 p.m.

Directed by Kris Rey, “Trash Mountain” stars Caleb Hearon, Zooey Deschanel, Jaboukie Young-White, Kyle Marvin, and Jacki Weaver. The plot follows Hearon’s character, a Chicago resident, as he returns to Missouri to handle the belongings of his hoarder father who recently passed away.

During last October’s filming, Hoffmeister praised the behavior of the crew, contrary to his expectations of “Hollywood attitude.” Hearon’s generous gesture of buying ice cream for the crew stood out. “He said, ‘Ice cream for everybody.’ There were over a hundred people,” Hoffmeister recalled.

Though the film’s wider theatrical release is pending, it received a 100% fresh rating from Rotten Tomatoes critics post-premiere.

Hoffmeister plans to take his staff to see the film once fully released, expressing enthusiasm for the store’s selection for filming. “They narrowed it down to us at the last minute,” he noted, mentioning the director’s preference for Dairy Palace.

This marks the first instance of a film being shot in Tinley Park, with challenges in acquiring permits addressed by Hoffmeister’s advocacy.

Dairy Palace continues to welcome visitors with its international fame boost. Located at 16760 Oak Park Ave, it operates from 2 to 10 p.m. daily. Weather permitting, it remains open towards the end of October. “If it stays nice, we stay open,” Hoffmeister mentioned.
