The Chicago Cubs have made strategic moves to strengthen their roster. With the team holding the top National League wild-card position, Cubs president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer committed to enhancing the team with decisive investments. This resulted in four trades leading up to Monday’s MLB trade deadline, with a clear focus on bolstering their pitching lineup.
Hoyer articulated the importance of these investments: “Every season at the deadline presents unique challenges. Based on how the team has performed, it was crucial to reinforce the roster for the remaining games. The resilience of this team has been impressive.”
The Cubs acquired right-handers Clay Holmes from the New York Mets and Kevin Gausman from the Toronto Blue Jays, reliever Ryan Zeferjahn from the Los Angeles Angels, left-hander Braxton Garrett from the Miami Marlins, and outfielder Tyrone Taylor from the Mets. Notably, Zeferjahn and Garrett remain under team control beyond this season.
To obtain these players, the Cubs traded former top prospect Moisés Ballesteros, shortstop Jefferson Rojas, and first baseman Jonathon Long. Additionally, they parted with three prospects ranked between 13 and 21, including outfielder Brett Bateman, right-hander Mason McGwire, and infielder Ty Southisene, alongside minor-league pitcher Jace Beck.
These aggressive moves reflect the front office’s belief in the Cubs’ potential for postseason success. According to Hoyer, “Ideally, trading prospects isn’t the first choice, but we aim to win by improving our roster. We’ve invested significantly in this roster in various aspects to keep the team competitive.”
The Cubs sought a controllable starting pitcher, a goal they had previously during last year’s trade deadline. While they engaged in discussions, the Cubs did not close any significant deals. Tarik Skubal of the Detroit Tigers, a top target, eventually transferred to the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Hoyer delved into the trade dynamics, explaining that building team rosters involves mutual interests. The acquisition of Gausman from the Blue Jays illustrated successful alignment in trade negotiations.
Holmes and Gausman offer a substantial upgrade to a pitching staff depleted by injuries. While right-hander Edward Cabrera’s return is imminent, Holmes’ recovery from a fibula fracture remains a point of discussion.
Manager Craig Counsell revealed potential changes to the Cubs’ pitching rotations. The team might consider a six-man rotation, albeit temporarily, to avoid overloading the bullpen.
During a conversation about Gausman, Hoyer highlighted his suitability: “Gausman’s experience and postseason success made him an ideal candidate once we discovered his availability.”
As the Cubs look to improve their standing, they hope these trades will yield more success in the postseason, aiming to surpass the division-leading Milwaukee Brewers. The upcoming games against the Brewers present a vital opportunity to secure a favorable position in the league. “Reinforcing our pitching staff puts pressure on us to maintain strong performances,” Hoyer noted.
