The Chicago Cubs showed promise in a series against the Toronto Blue Jays at Wrigley Field. The team looked like their former selves, mirroring periods earlier in the season when they pulled off ten-game winning streaks, twice.
Series Recap: A Strong Start Turns Sour
During the first 15 innings, the Cubs dominated, outscoring Toronto 21-2. More than 40,000 fans filled Wrigley Field and celebrated as the Cubs built a 5-0 lead by the sixth inning on Saturday, following a 16-2 triumph on Friday.
However, optimism turned into disappointment when the bullpen failed in the late innings, resulting in an 8-6 loss. Relief pitcher Jacob Webb expressed frustration with his performance. The Cubs’ chance to secure the series win was postponed due to bad weather, rescheduling Sunday’s game to August 6.
A notable pitching duel between Shota Imanaga and Dylan Cease was also postponed, depriving fans of an exciting matchup.
Pete Crow-Armstrong’s Standout Performance
Amid the team’s ups and downs, center fielder Pete Crow-Armstrong is having an exceptional June. He has turned his season around with a .437 batting average, .481 on-base percentage, and .930 slugging percentage over 17 games. Crow-Armstrong hit nine home runs, with 14 RBIs, and six stolen bases during this period.
His recent performance included a game against the San Francisco Giants where he was one hit shy of the cycle and achieving the cycle two days later against the Colorado Rockies. Manager Craig Counsell highlighted his significant contribution to the team.
Crow-Armstrong is also focusing on improving his walk rate. He walked more often in fewer games this year, an important development as he takes on more responsibility as a leadoff hitter.
“Getting to first base is priority one,” said Crow-Armstrong. “The walks are a fun new thing that I’m learning how to take.”
Rotation Adjustments Amid Schedule Changes
Sunday’s postponement affected the Cubs’ starting rotation. Shota Imanaga will start the first game against the Mets. Edward Cabrera and Javier Assad follow on Tuesday and Wednesday. Cabrera returns after leaving his last start due to a cramp.
Meanwhile, Matthew Boyd is progressing in rehab. He struck out seven in four scoreless innings at Single-A South Bend. The left-hander continues recovering from a meniscus injury and shoulder issues.
Upcoming Challenges on the Horizon
The Cubs are nearing the end of a series of games against teams with losing records that began on June 2. So far, they are 8-9 with a rainout and four games left against the Mets before facing the division-leading Milwaukee Brewers on June 28.
Despite the recent loss, the Cubs maintain an optimistic perspective. They hold the top position in their division over the last ten games with a 6-4 record.
