Cubs Face Struggles After Impressive Winning Streak

Nearly two weeks ago, the Chicago Cubs were enjoying their second 10-game winning streak of the season. Fast forward to now, they find themselves no longer leading the National League Central standings. A 5-2 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers shifted the spotlight, ending the Cubs’ reign at the top.

Following four consecutive losses, the Cubs have won just two of their last 10 games. They now aim to prevent a complete sweep by the Brewers at Wrigley Field. Ian Happ reflected on the situation, saying, “Every year has periods like that. If we had the same record today but won every series, it would feel different, more consistent. There’s pros and cons to winning 10 straight twice, but we’re nine games over .500 and in a good spot.” Happ added, “If you told us this would be our record at this point, I think everyone would have signed up for it, so move forward and attack tomorrow.”

The Cubs’ offense faltered in key moments, continuing their trend of frustration. Jacob Misiorowski proved challenging, allowing just three hits, one walk, and striking out eight in six innings. Though they had an early opportunity, with Nico Hoerner walking and Michael Busch reaching on an error, the Cubs couldn’t capitalize as Misiorowski settled quickly.

Manager Craig Counsell noted, “We took good swings and missed some balls. He got locked in, and his strikeout stuff kept us on edge. We have to be aggressive or you’ll get stuck hitting with two strikes.” However, despite the loss, Ben Brown’s performance stood out. While the scoreline might not reflect it, his development signals significant potential. Too often, he had faltered due to one poor inning, but adjustments in his pitching repertoire, like adding a sinker, seem promising.

“Ben’s making progress. Not every outing is easy. I’m pleased with the progress he’s made,” said Counsell.

Despite allowing three runs in the first three innings, Brown escaped a potentially game-changing fourth inning. A dropped fly ball and an infield single added pressure, but Brown struck out two batters and ended the inning, keeping the deficit manageable.

Brown shared, “I feel like I limited the damage well. There’s more to learn from each game, but I’m happy with my execution.” His season ERA now stands at a solid 2.09, giving the Cubs hope despite the deficit. However, Misiorowski’s fastball reached speeds up to 101.5 mph, limiting the Cubs’ opportunities significantly.

The Cubs managed to get their first run in the eighth inning, but critical strikeouts hindered a comeback. With bases loaded, Pinch hitter Michael Conforto, facing Chad Patrick, grounded into a forceout, ending the promising rally.

Counsell maintained a determined outlook, remarking, “We’ve got 115 games to go. They beat us twice, but we’ll come out tomorrow to try and win.” The Cubs continue to face challenges but remain focused on turning things around.
