Criticism Over Meryl Streep’s Casting as Aslan in Netflix’s Narnia

Recent casting decisions for Netflix’s adaptation of “Narnia” have sparked criticism among Christian and media figures. Meryl Streep has been cast as the voice of the Christ-like lion, Aslan, leading to questions about the theological implications of a female voice representing an allegory for Jesus Christ.

“Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew” is written and directed by Greta Gerwig, known for her work on “Barbie.” This film is based on the 1955 novel from the children’s series “The Chronicles of Narnia” by C.S. Lewis.

Meryl Streep’s casting as Aslan has been met with strong reactions. Some fans and critics expressed concern over altering the portrayal of a character intended as a Christ figure. An online petition has called for the replacement of Gerwig as director for future films. Movieguide founder Dr. Ted Baehr expressed confusion over the choice, questioning whether this change might alienate Christian audiences.

Dr. Baehr highlighted the importance of maintaining Aslan as an allegory for Jesus Christ. Although he acknowledged the filmmaker’s different viewpoint, he believes that the casting decision might deter a significant Christian audience.

Greta Gerwig, a Unitarian Universalist and regular churchgoer, envisions her version as a “rock opera.” She sought an actor with profound qualities and a mix of depth and joy to voice Aslan. Streep, she explains, could communicate these traits effectively.

Ned Lott, a seasoned casting and voice director, recalls the deliberation involved in casting Aslan for the 2005 film. Emphasizing the importance of preserving the character’s integrity, Lott shared his experience of discovering Liam Neeson as the iconic voice for Aslan after intense auditions. Neeson’s role helped maintain fidelity to Lewis’s original portrayal.

The dialogue around casting raises questions about the relationship between character integrity and artistic expression. Lott explains that while artistic choices can lead to diverse casting, retaining the essence of the character remains crucial.
