A Colorado judge has raised the bond for Barry Morphew, a suspect in a murder case, citing his behavior while on previous bond. Recently, Boulder County Sheriff’s deputies arrested Morphew. His bond increased from $3 million to $10 million, payable in cash only. In court, the judge explained the change due to Morphew’s potential to commit new crimes. She mentioned his disregard for court rules and his unwillingness to comply if it interferes with his lifestyle while out on bond.
Barry Morphew appeared for a bond hearing in Alamosa County Court on September 8, 2026. He was arrested on September 3 in unincorporated Boulder County on an Alamosa County warrant for non-compliance. The Boulder County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that deputies arrested him at around 9:11 p.m., without incident, and booked him into the Boulder County Jail.
His arrest came shortly after prosecutors filed for a warrant and bond modification. The judge approved the request on September 3 and set a bond of $3 million in cash with nationwide extradition. A bond hearing on September 8 increased this to $10 million. During the hearing, Morphew appeared in chains, wearing a white and orange striped outfit. After the session, deputies escorted him out of the courtroom.
Prosecutors, in their filing, used GPS monitoring data to show Morphew left home under a work exception to his bond on August 26, heading instead to Denver International Airport. They mentioned his attorneys claimed he did not work there, suggesting he might have gone to pick up his daughter. Regardless, they argued his journey to the airport violated his release conditions, as he was only permitted to leave home for work, highlighting him as an extreme flight risk.
GPS and video evidence indicated Morphew was at the airport from around 10 a.m. to 11:45 a.m., before leaving. Additionally, during Tuesday’s hearing, prosecutors revealed he visited various locations in Denver, including a steakhouse, Whole Foods, and a liquor store, based on GPS data. They tracked him near hotels and malls, eventually reaching East 8th Avenue and Colorado Boulevard.
CBS Colorado reported a hit-and-run incident at this location involving Morphew. Video footage captured him after a collision, refusing to show ID or insurance, offering cash, and leaving the scene.
Prosecutors are reviewing the GPS data related to the conditions of his release, as Morphew awaits trial for first-degree murder of his wife, Suzanne Morphew. He maintains his plea of not guilty, denying any involvement in her death.
