Controversy Surrounds Tennessee’s Lethal Injection Protocol

The state of Tennessee has encountered significant challenges with its lethal injection procedures this year. The most recent controversy involves death row inmate Christa Pike.

On December 4, 2007, Christa Pike appeared in Knox County criminal court. Her case dates back to 1995, when she confessed to the brutal murder and torture of her classmate, Colleen Slemmer. According to authorities, the crime occurred in Knoxville, Tennessee.

Pike, then 18, along with two teenage accomplices, lured Slemmer into a secluded wooded area. There, a pentagram was carved into Slemmer’s chest, and she was violently attacked with a piece of asphalt. Detectives later found a fragment of Slemmer’s skull in Pike’s coat pocket.

This case has brought attention to the complexities and controversies surrounding the state’s administration of justice, particularly in the execution process.
