Recognition and Controversy
Four years ago, Taif Sami Mohammed was honored by the United States as a symbol of courage. Secretary of State Antony Blinken praised her efforts to combat corruption in Iraq. Known as the ‘Iron Woman,’ Mohammed was credited with halting bribes and exposing schemes enriching corrupt officials despite facing threats.
Currently, Mohammed is reportedly outside Iraq and on the U.S. terrorist watchlist. Her U.S. visa was revoked, a significant turnaround for someone who once received a prominent award from Biden’s administration in 2022.
While the Biden State Department shamefully celebrated and awarded foreigners who threaten our nation, the Trump State Department revokes their visas and ensures these individuals are removed from our countryAssistant Secretary of State for Global Public Affairs Dylan Johnson told Fox News Digital.
Taif Sami Mohammed, a former finance minister in Iraq, has lost her U.S. visa and is now on the FBI’s terrorist watchlist. During the Trump administration, promises were made to ensure suspected terrorists would not stay in the U.S. The State Department has not clarified when she was added to the watchlist or the intelligence involved in that decision.
Republican Allegations
The situation with Mohammed has grown over the past year. Republican lawmakers have accused her of facilitating terrorist financing via Iraq’s financial system. Representatives Joe Wilson and Greg Steube identified her as a significant enabler of terrorist funding and urged for action against her.
The allegations contradict the Biden administration’s previous commendations of Mohammed in 2022. At that time, she was regarded as a leader against corruption in Iraq while serving as the deputy finance minister and director general of the budget department.
During the awards ceremony in March 2022, Blinken highlighted Mohammed’s efforts to disrupt bribery and uncover corruption. Twelve women were recognized for their extraordinary courage and leadership, with remarks from first lady Jill Biden.
Ongoing Legal Issues
Mohammed later became Iraq’s finance minister and managed the federal budget and government spending. Recently, an Iraqi court summoned her for an investigation linked to a broader corruption probe involving former senior officials.
Though Mohammed’s exact location remains uncertain, the investigation is not a direct accusation of wrongdoing. It stems from a more extensive review of government contracts and public funds. Her inclusion on the U.S. terrorist list adds a significant dimension to the situation.
