Nick Shirley, recognizable for his investigative reporting on purported daycare fraud in Minnesota, swiftly dismissed the allegations. On X, he stated: “This is completely false. Here is my family tree for proof,” and included a Community Notes tag for authenticity. His family lineage, traced through the Crowley family, displays no connections to Robinson or his kin.
Community Notes later appended a label to the original post, corroborating Shirley’s denial and noting that subsequent comments from the poster linked the claim to Grok, an AI chatbot developed by Elon Musk’s xAI.
Origins of the Rumor
The rumor seemingly originated from a Grok chatbot response, which proliferated through screenshot captures and replies on X. In one verified interaction with Grok, the chatbot erroneously suggested that Utah genealogy records, implying Shirley and Robinson were half first cousins through their mothers, Amber Jones Robinson and Brooke T. Jones. This claim conflicted with Shirley’s provided family information.
In a different exchange, Grok clarified that no verifiable evidence supports a familial link between Shirley and Robinson, with the half-cousin theory likely arising from speculative overlaps in Utah names.
Shirley’s Connection to Kirk
Nick Shirley has shared publicly, including a December appearance on the PBD Podcast, that he was the final guest on Kirk’s show prior to his fatal shooting in Orem, Utah, on September 10. Shirley recounted to podcast host Patrick Bet-David that Kirk invited him onto the program via text the night before the incident.
