Concerns Raised Over Crime in D.C. Amid Political Shifts

Jeanine Pirro’s Concerns Around D.C.’s Shifting Political Landscape

Jeanine Pirro, former U.S. Attorney for Washington D.C., recently joined Fox & Friends to discuss the implications of Democratic Socialist Janesse Lewis George’s primary win. Pirro voiced her worries regarding George’s stance on teen curfews and immigration enforcement. She compared these policies with President Trump’s initiatives that resulted in a 23% decline in crime rates within the district.

Federal Investigation into D.C. Public Schools

A rare special grand jury probe has been launched by federal prosecutors targeting truancy, graduation rates, and attendance records in D.C. public schools. As reported by The Washington Post, this investigation focuses on how young people are supervised and overseen in the capital.

This initiative aims at protecting the youth in D.C., according to a law enforcement official interviewed by Fox News.

Teachers and staff from several D.C. Public Schools have been contacted recently about student absences and graduation practices. The Washington Post confirmed that testimonies have begun and more personnel are expected to appear before the panel.

Special Grand Jury’s Role

The involvement of a special grand jury is uncommon. It requires judicial approval to form such a panel, which can perform extensive judicial investigations and compile thorough reports on findings even if no charges are filed.

A spokesperson for Pirro’s office refrained from confirming or denying the investigation’s existence when speaking with The Washington Post.

Focus on Academic Year Amid Inquiry

Muriel Bowser, Mayor of D.C., has stated the city’s commitment to the upcoming school year.

Our priority remains welcoming students and families for a successful start to the new year, expressed the mayor’s office.

The city pledged to keep all school data public in accordance with transparency standards.

Concerns on Truancy and Crime

Pirro has linked school absenteeism to youth crime and interference with teen curfew adherence. In a news conference held in May, she spoke about potential legal actions against repeated curfew violations or school absences.

We’re taking these issues seriously and will address both youths and their parents, Pirro commented.

Her office reportedly sought student records concerning chronic truancy and curfew violations, though these records were not voluntarily handed over by the city.

Previous Graduation Scandal

The new investigation follows years after a scandal in D.C. schools related to graduation requirements. An investigation into Ballou High School revealed diplomas were awarded without adherence to attendance rules or proper course completion. This scrutiny expanded to multiple high schools, showing that one-third of D.C.’s 2017 graduates failed to meet requirements.

Despite tightened attendance enforcement, absenteeism persists. During the 2023-24 school term, 16,000 students of D.C. Public Schools missed classes without valid excuse, making up one-third of K-12 enrollment, according to The Washington Post.

Stepheny Price, a writer for Fox News, focuses on various topics including crime stories and border security.
