Colorado Teacher Found Dead: Husband Arrested for Suspected Murder

A Colorado elementary school teacher, Lindsey Barnett, was found dead at home, raising questions about the events surrounding her death. Her husband, Patrick Theodore “Ted” Barnett, 40, was arrested on suspicion of first-degree murder, according to Lakewood police.

Details from an arrest affidavit provide insight into the investigation. Barnett called 911 on August 13, 2026, at around 6 a.m., reporting that Lindsey had harmed herself and was not breathing. He mentioned their two children were in the home. Responders found Lindsey in the shower, with a significant neck wound and a serrated knife nearby.

Evidence at the scene pointed to discrepancies in Barnett’s account. Officers discovered extensive blood on the couple’s bed and a trail leading to Lindsey’s body in the bathroom, where there was less blood. A footprint, resembling a woman’s, and a disturbed plant hinted at a struggle. Forensic analysis identified blood between the bed and bathroom not visible to the naked eye.

Barnett claimed he and Lindsey were facing marital issues and were sleeping separately. He said that on the morning of her death, he heard the shower running and found Lindsey bleeding. Physical analysis of Barnett revealed fresh injuries and dried blood on his body, inconsistent with his explanation of the event. Lindsey’s injuries suggested defensive wounds.

Lindsey’s mother relayed that her daughter had no history of suicidal thoughts. She described Barnett as verbally abusive. Further investigation revealed Barnett was involved in another relationship. Confronted with inconsistencies, Barnett maintained his innocence but failed to provide a satisfactory explanation for evidence against him.

In pursuit of a murder charge, detectives noted forensic evidence suggesting Lindsey was moved from the bed to the shower. Barnett’s conflicting statements and injuries contributed to their suspicions. He was arrested later that day and remains in jail without bond, with a court date set for August 20.

Lindsey Barnett served as an art teacher at Hutchinson and Westgate Elementary Schools. Principal DeAnn Hoffman praised her dedication and passion for teaching. The school offered mental health support to students and staff affected by her death.
