Actor Christopher Atkins recently shared insights about his career during an appearance at Fanboy Expo Knoxville in Tennessee, a gathering celebrating pop culture. People magazine reported on Atkins’s reflection on how his drinking habits impacted his acting opportunities, particularly the lead role in the 1984 film “Footloose,” which ultimately went to Kevin Bacon.

Atkins was initially offered the role of Ren in “Footloose” following his screen debut alongside Brooke Shields in “The Blue Lagoon.” However, issues with alcohol caused him to miss an important meeting with the filmmakers. Atkins recounted telling the panel, “I was a mess back then. I was partying too much, and they called me in.” He recalled admitting, “I can’t go in right now. I’ve been drinking,” and despite efforts to see him, he blew the chance, losing the part.

The actor, now nearly 40 years sober, also discussed his experiences filming “The Blue Lagoon” at 18. He expressed how acting was never his original ambition, having initially dreamed of becoming a baseball player. Despite lacking acting experience, Atkins caught the attention of casting agents through modeling in New York City, leading to his debut role. He explained the sudden change in his life post-release, mentioning the overwhelming fame and continuous media demand, which took some adjusting.

Atkins further touched on the controversial aspects of “The Blue Lagoon,” a film known for its depiction of teenage sexuality and nudity. With Brooke Shields, controversies surrounded the film’s portrayal, though it achieved box-office success, grossing over $58 million worldwide and earning an Oscar nomination for Best Cinematography. He noted that filming in the natural, isolated environment made the scenes feel authentic and necessary, ensuring comfort was provided by the director and crew.

Reflecting on his Hollywood journey, Atkins revealed contentment with his choices, prioritizing family over career pursuits. He shared, “I married young and wanted to be a dad more than chase the business,” highlighting his early aspirations to have children, leading him to take on jobs providing for his family.

Atkins’s career spans over 100 films and TV shows, and he now aims to produce his own projects. Expressing gratitude, he stated, “I’ve been blessed… There are no regrets.”
