Jeff Hambrecht, the owner of Proverbs 27:17, a Christian gym located in Oklahoma City, aims to combat temptation within his men’s-only fitness facility. While his approach has sparked both support and backlash, Hambrecht remains focused on his mission.
Hambrecht explains that traditional co-ed gyms can be distracting for some men who want to avoid potential temptations. This gym offers an alternative for those who seek a ‘lust-free’ environment. Hambrecht compares it to someone recovering from addiction, noting that it is important to avoid triggers—in this case, environments that might provoke unwanted thoughts.
“If you’re an alcoholic trying to recover, you avoid places with alcohol. The same goes for struggling with lust,” Hambrecht shared with Fox News Digital.
Having personally overcome struggles with addiction, Hambrecht uses his gym as a place for men to find community and address mental health issues without stigma. He emphasizes creating a space where men can be vulnerable and grow closer to their faith.
Kim Abt, owner of a women-only gym called PWRGRLS in Sherman Oaks, California, expressed understanding of Hambrecht’s idea. Men often feel distracted by women in traditional gym settings. Abt’s gym, where the community aspect is crucial, seeks to provide a safe space for women.
“Men wanting gender-secluded gyms is fair. It’s about being comfortable and focused,” Abt noted, relating it to her own gym’s success.
Brad Jensen, a fitness influencer known as ‘thesoberbodybuilder’, acknowledges the mixed reactions towards Proverbs 27:17. He suggests that a Christian gym could include a dress code and maintain values, without excluding anyone.
“There’s a fine line. If actions make others uncomfortable, it crosses boundaries. Respect is key,” Jensen added.
The discourse around gender-segregated gyms underscores the importance of creating respectful and supportive environments for personal growth.
