CBS News recently announced significant changes to its flagship program, ’60 Minutes.’ Bari Weiss, the editor-in-chief at CBS News, has recruited Ross Douthat, her former colleague from the New York Times, to join the program as a correspondent.

Newly appointed executive producer Nick Bilton informed staff that Douthat, known for his work as a conservative columnist, will bring his ability to discuss complex topics with depth and empathy to ’60 Minutes.’ Bilton praised Douthat’s capacity to make controversial topics accessible, highlighting his contribution to the show’s collaborative atmosphere.

After 17 years at the New York Times, Douthat’s departure was acknowledged by Opinion Editor Kathleen Kingsbury, who commended his commitment to meaningful discourse. She expressed gratitude for his contributions and stated he would be missed by the team.

Norah O’Donnell, a veteran of CBS News, will also be joining ’60 Minutes’ as a correspondent. Bilton emphasized her valuable contributions over the years, including interviews with prominent figures like Pope Francis and President Biden. Her transition from ‘CBS Evening News’ to ’60 Minutes’ aligns with the network’s new strategic direction.

The memo from Bilton also introduced several new contributors, including Sebastian Junger, a journalist and filmmaker; Gianna Toboni, a former Vice News correspondent; and Trevor Phillips, a former Sky News presenter now serving as senior global affairs correspondent.

Bari Weiss and CBS News President Tom Cibrowski shared their enthusiasm for these changes, inviting staff to welcome the new team members. The announcement is part of a larger restructuring effort that includes notable departures. Veteran correspondents such as Lesley Stahl and Bill Whitaker remain, though Anderson Cooper has departed earlier this year.

The overhaul has sparked discussions and reactions, with some liberal critics expressing discontent. Despite the changes, ’60 Minutes’ continues to be a significant platform in the CBS News lineup.
