The Los Angeles Rams faced a disappointing defeat against the San Francisco 49ers, losing 27-7, despite the absence of Aaron Donald. The game in Australia was anticipated as a turning point for the Rams’ defense, with prominent players like two-time Defensive Player of the Year Myles Garrett and All-Pro cornerback Trent McDuffie taking the field. However, the team allowed 379 total yards, managed only one turnover, and failed to record a single sack.
The defensive line, including Garrett, Kobie Turner, Braden Fiske, and Byron Young, has been the focus of criticism. Yet, ESPN analyst Dan Orlovsky points a finger at defensive coordinator Chris Shula. On the show First Take, Orlovsky expressed his concern: “I’m concerned about their defensive coordinator,” he said. “In the last four games, this Rams defense has been outplayed by quarterbacks like Bryce Young, Caleb Williams, Sam Darnold, and Brock Purdy. This isn’t due to a lack of talent,” he added, emphasizing Shula’s failure to create advantages or alter strategies, even as Myles Garrett was neutralized.
Over the past four games, including last season’s matchups, Rams’ defense faltered on third down, conceding a QBR of 98.3 out of a perfect score of 100, and securing just one sack. This is a worrying trend extending over two seasons.
The Rams ended last season with a record of 12-5, narrowly missing the Super Bowl after a 31-27 loss to the Seattle Seahawks in the NFC Championship Game. The offense, powered by league MVP Matthew Stafford and All-Pro receivers Puka Nacua and Davante Adams, led in total yards and points per game, while the defense was mediocre, averaging 327.5 total yards and 20.4 points allowed per game.
During the playoffs, challenges persisted for the Rams’ defense, allowing 31 points to the Carolina Panthers, 17 to the Chicago Bears, and another 31 to the Seahawks. Even against Sean McVay, Kyle Shanahan’s teams often perform well, and Thursday’s game highlighted continuing defensive struggles, disappointing fans hoping for improvement after the offseason.
Chris Shula has been part of the Rams since 2017 and assumed the role of defensive coordinator in 2024. Initially a respected coach, Shula’s ability to manage this talent-laden defense is now under scrutiny, posing significant issues for the team’s future.
