Italian women’s basketball player Cecilia Zandalasini expressed strong dissatisfaction with FIBA officials after Italy’s close loss to the U.S. in the Women’s World Cup game. The match ended with a score of 55-52 in favor of the U.S.
During the final moments, Zandalasini attempted a 3-pointer to tie the game. While guarded by Jackie Young, she appeared to be fouled, reacting as though her face was swiped.
No foul was called, forcing Zandalasini to take a contested shot, which she missed, sealing the game.
Frustrated by the lack of a foul call, Zandalasini confronted the officials and had to be restrained by staff members. Later, she apologized for her behavior, acknowledging that it was not sportsmanlike.
In a postgame press conference, she stated, “I would like to apologize for the way I reacted. It wasn’t sportsmanship at all. I just wanted to apologize to the team and the referee.”
Acknowledging her emotional response, Zandalasini said, “When I wear this jersey, it’s just a different me. I feel embarrassed.”
In the game, Zandalasini scored 14 points and grabbed seven rebounds over 27 minutes. Despite having a strong performance, Italy struggled as the U.S. effectively used their interior offense to draw fouls and secure points at the foul line.
Jackie Young led the U.S. team with 10 points, along with four rebounds and three assists. Angel Reese contributed eight points and three rebounds during the game.
