Fanatics Fest, held a couple of weeks ago, assembled many influential figures from sports, entertainment, and sports entertainment. A standout story from the event involved New York Giants running back Cam Skattebo and his backflip stunt that gained widespread attention.
Skattebo, returning to training camp after a severe leg injury last season, concerned Giants fans when he attempted a backflip and appeared to injure his knee. Head coach John Harbaugh later remarked humorously that Skattebo could have “at least stuck the landing.” However, this comment did not close the discussions that followed Skattebo’s stunt.
ESPN’s Jordan Raanan reported that both John Harbaugh and GM Joe Schoen addressed the issue with Skattebo. They reportedly advised him to stop performing backflips, noting a previous incident where he executed a backflip at a charity softball game in May. Such conversations are common in the National Football League where coaches and GMs guide players on behavior changes beneficial to the team. However, it is rare for the focus to be on backflips.
Despite the light-hearted nature of the conversation, fans who witnessed Skattebo’s backflip at Fanatics Fest were understandably concerned. While other forms of risky behavior have been discussed in the NFL, the conversation about backflips is quite unique.
Whether Skattebo will heed this advice remains uncertain. It would not be surprising if his flips were seen during games this season. Giants supporters can only hope that these impressive displays do not lead to further injury concerns.
