The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) reported a fatal shooting incident involving a California woman. Shalini Thakur, aged 38, was shot outside a Sacramento County Panera Bread by an individual who had been stalking her for months. The assailant was identified as Rohit Rohit, an illegal immigrant from India, who was under a restraining order at the time of the incident.
According to DHS, Rohit approached Thakur while she was near her vehicle. When she attempted to flee, he pursued her and ultimately shot her in the head. After the shooting, he drove away, but law enforcement caught up to him. Authorities stated that Rohit took his own life with a gun during the confrontation.
The DHS spokesperson commented, “This tragedy would have been completely avoided if it weren’t for the Biden administration releasing this killer into our country.” The spokesperson criticized what they referred to as “reckless policies” that jeopardize American lives and expressed condolences to the victim’s family.
Thakur had been subjected to Rohit’s stalking since at least January. Reports indicate she first became aware of his actions when discovering an Apple AirTag under her car’s hood. Throughout the period leading to the incident, Rohit attempted to coerce Thakur into marriage and exerted control over her social interactions.
In addition to stalking her, Rohit reportedly deflated her car tires and followed her to work to create opportunities to offer her assistance. There were allegations that he obtained a copy of her apartment key, granting him unauthorized access to her home while she was asleep.
Despite a restraining order issued in May, Rohit’s harassment persisted through July. Thakur’s mother, Sudesh Kumari, expressed frustration, noting her daughter had repeatedly informed the police about the threat but felt that insufficient action was taken.
The DHS confirmed that Rohit entered the United States illegally via Arizona in August 2023. While detained by U.S. Border Patrol, he was released under a policy allowing migrants entry prior to their court appearance.
DoorDash, where Rohit allegedly worked as a delivery driver, did not provide a comment regarding the incident.
