California Billionaires Mobilize Against Proposed Wealth Tax

A coalition comprising highly influential figures, including Google co-founder Sergey Brin and prominent tech investors, is actively working to counter a proposed one-time tax targeting the wealthiest residents of California. This initiative, if passed, would levy taxes on individuals with a net worth exceeding $1 billion.

The campaign efforts have intensified significantly as the coalition has allocated approximately $87 million for advertising slots across California. These advertisements are set to begin next month and aim to sway public opinion against the tax measure.

The announcement comes as Proposition 40, a measure on the upcoming November ballot, seeks to impose this one-time tax. The proposed tax has already led to significant shifts, with some wealthy Californians contemplating relocation and others increasingly involved in political finance within the state.

Instead of outright opposition to Proposition 40, the coalition named Building A Better California has introduced two alternative tax-related measures on the ballot. These measures possess clauses that could potentially nullify the billionaire tax, should any one of them pass.

The advertising strategy disclosed by the coalition does not specify which ballot measures the ads will promote. However, Abby Lunardini, spokeswoman for the group, highlighted the coalition’s dedication to ensuring that California voters are well-equipped with comprehensive information about impactful policies.

“Our coalition is committed to ensuring that all California voters are informed about policies that impact our state’s future and economy,” Lunardini stated. “The measures we support provide important and common-sense protections designed to improve state accountability and governance and protect California families from new taxes on their retirement and savings.”
