Brittney Griner Files for Divorce from Cherelle Griner

WNBA star Brittney Griner and her wife Cherelle Griner are ending their marriage after eight years together. Brittney Griner filed for divorce in Fulton County, Georgia, as reported by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

The couple, who have been married since 2018, share a 2-year-old son. According to court documents, the separation date is listed as July 24. Brittney Griner described the marriage as ‘irretrievably broken’.

In February 2022, Brittney Griner faced arrest and imprisonment in Russia for carrying vape cartridges with cannabis oil in her luggage. Accused of smuggling narcotic drugs, she was sentenced to nine years in a Russian penal colony. During her detention, Cherelle Griner, an attorney, actively worked for her wife’s release.

Brittney Griner was freed in December 2022, following a U.S.-Russia prisoner swap. Her case drew significant attention and advocacy.
