Jacy Maranhao, a Brazilian soccer player, provided an update on his health following a dramatic fall at Estádio Major Antônio Couto Pereira. Maranhao, who plays for Coritiba, injured his ankle after accidentally falling through a trap door during a goal celebration.

Maranhao explained that he became ‘carried away’ after scoring a goal for his team during a match. Eager to share the moment with his wife in the crowd, he jumped over the pitch barrier, unaware of the open trap door awaiting him on the other side.

The 29-year-old defender and captain of Coritiba shared, according to Brazilian outlet Globo, “I scored the goal and wanted to celebrate with my wife because she’s pregnant. But then I remembered it was my first goal at Couto Pereira stadium, and I also wanted to celebrate with the fans, but I hadn’t remembered there was a moat there.”

Although the goal was negated due to an offsides ruling, Coritiba emerged victorious with a 2-1 win. Despite his injury, Maranhao played the remainder of the half before leaving the game.

Reflecting on the experience, Maranhao remarked, “I twisted my foot there. It’s a bit sore, but I’m fine. Center-backs hardly ever score goals. So, when you do score…I just got carried away.”

After the incident became a viral moment, Maranhao communicated on social media, “At first, it was more of a scare than anything else. During the match my foot was quite painful and I couldn’t really put weight on it, but today I’m feeling much better and recovering well.”

Jacy Maranhao joined Coritiba for his second season after previously playing for Operário. This season, he has played in 19 matches, scoring one goal.
