Bob Iger’s Unexpected Lakers Ownership

The Los Angeles Lakers have been sold for $12.5 billion to an ownership group that includes former Disney CEO Bob Iger. This transaction is noteworthy because Iger, known for his support of the Clippers, has now become part-owner of their long-time rival.

Bob Iger’s journey with Los Angeles basketball began when he moved to California in 2000. Despite his love for the sport, he chose to back the Clippers over the Lakers. During a 2021 podcast appearance, Iger explained his decision. He attributed his allegiance to growing up as a New York Knicks fan and the affordability of Clippers’ tickets as compared to those of the Lakers.

In an unexpected turn, Iger has now joined forces with Josh Kushner in purchasing the Lakers. The surprising move has brought to light Iger’s past remarks about his previous reluctance to root for the Lakers, a team he once said wasn’t in his ‘DNA’.

Another layer of intrigue surrounds the timeline of the purchase. Billionaire Mark Walter had previously acquired the Lakers for around $10 billion in June 2025. Just 14 months later, he facilitated this sale at a $12.5 billion valuation. The swift transaction has raised questions, especially since Walter’s business dealings are reportedly under federal scrutiny. While there’s no direct link between the investigation and the sale, the quick turnover remains notable.

Despite Bob Iger’s historical association with the Clippers and his past comments, his acquisition of a stake in the Lakers signifies a significant shift. For a person who once found it incompatible to support the Lakers, owning part of the franchise marks a major change.
