Bear Intrusion Records High Amid Food Shortage

A family in Colorado Springs had an unexpected visitor in July when a bear strolled into their home and helped itself to breakfast. Security footage from the home showed the bear entering the kitchen on July 21 and grabbing a snack.

“I was preparing for the day and heard a loud noise. I checked with my children, aged 8, 6, and 3, who were all upstairs playing,” said Nerissa England, as reported by Storyful. “I thought it was perhaps a picture that had fallen off the wall. My curious 8-year-old, Zara Lee, went downstairs to look, with my husband following for coffee,” she shared. Discovering the bear in their kitchen, the family was naturally shocked.

“A bear entered and helped itself to food before dragging a trash can outside,” England commented.

The bear entered through a back door left open for air circulation in the summer heat. It consumed Flintstones vitamins left on a table, then took the trash can outside to rummage through it.

Zara Lee and her father successfully scared the bear away by creating noise and opening the door.

“We’ll keep the door closed while local bears are active before hibernation!” England stated.

Incidents of bears entering homes have surged nationwide due to food shortages caused by a dry winter, according to Reuters. Bears’ diets are typically composed of plants, berries, and nuts, which account for 90% of their nutrition. The lack of these resources has increased bear encounters with humans as they search for food.

This behavior has tragically resulted in a substantial number of bear deaths across several states. Many bears have been euthanized, involved in traffic accidents, shot, or electrocuted after interactions with humans.
