Baker Mayfield is feeling “disrespected” by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as he focuses on delivering his best performance on the field. The quarterback’s contract demands were unmet, and he will play the last season of a three-year, $100 million agreement.
“I’ve been direct about my feelings toward Tampa. It’s where my family calls home,” Mayfield stated. “We set a deadline, and I committed to focusing solely on football afterward. I don’t know if they expected me to accept their offers.”
Mayfield appreciates the Buccaneers for giving him a chance but believes he’s significantly contributed to the team. He had some of his best seasons in Tampa Bay and aims for further growth. Drafted first overall by Cleveland in 2018, his career found new life when he replaced Tom Brady in 2023. He made the Pro Bowl in his first two seasons and led the team to NFC South titles. An MVP contender mid-season last year, his pace was hindered by injuries.
“Feeling a bit undervalued is disheartening,” Mayfield admitted. “Other quarterbacks are compensated more, and I believe my performance merits similar recognition. This isn’t about seeking pity, but comparing with peers places me in certain categories.”
Despite the contract stalemate, Mayfield assured teammates the issue won’t distract him; he won’t use it as motivation either. “Winning with the team is what drives me,” he explained. “Personal motivations aren’t about money. Betting on myself is a familiar challenge, and I have a supportive team to achieve our goal of playing in February.”
Achieving metrics like 4,500 yards passing, 41 touchdown passes, a 71.4% completion rate, and a 106.8 passer rating might increase his market value further. Currently, Mayfield’s contract demand ranges between $50-55 million annually.
Offensive lineman Ben Bredeson praised Mayfield’s consistency and leadership. “Baker remains unchanged by these contract issues. He’s a focused leader and a great teammate who prioritizes the game.”
Meanwhile, defensive tackle Vita Vea is also dealing with contract dissatisfaction. Entering the final year of his contract and missing practice due to a back injury, Vea’s situation adds another layer to the Buccaneers’ contract conversations.
“Winning is our priority,” Mayfield emphasized. “Vita needs to get healthy, and he deserves fair compensation. He’s essential to our defense and the team should address his contract needs.”
