Authorities Crack Down on Online Child Predators Using Gaming Platforms

In Las Vegas, Livingston Parish deputies executed a search warrant on a suspect accused of using voice-changing technology to impersonate a teenage girl while speaking with a child online. The arrest highlighted the risk of predators exploiting digital tools. Livingston Parish Sheriff Jason Ard expressed concern over the ease with which offenders disguise themselves using these apps.

The suspect, a registered sex offender, was found on Roblox, a popular online gaming platform for children. He shouldn’t have been using the app due to his offender status. Sheriff Ard warned that the devices children use daily could serve as tools for predators, comparing them to past fears of ‘the white van’ in communities.

“This isn’t a victimless crime,” Ard remarked. “Children are being harmed, lured away from their homes, and exploited in various ways.”

Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill echoed similar sentiments, discussing the uptick in online child exploitation. The state expects to receive 90,000 reports of such incidents this year. By May, they had already processed 30,000 reports. The statewide crackdown on predatory behavior has resulted in numerous arrests, with Murrill stressing parental awareness.

At CrimeCon in Las Vegas, experts including Chris Hansen, known for hosting ‘To Catch a Predator,’ joined discussions on combating child exploitation. Ard reiterated that the internet and devices have become modern threats within homes.

Murrill’s lawsuit against Roblox forms part of Louisiana’s broader effort to hold platforms accountable. Critics argue that popular apps aren’t doing enough to eliminate predatory behavior. Roblox has faced multiple lawsuits alleging it creates an unsafe environment for children. Despite this, Roblox maintains it is investing heavily in safety measures, claiming misrepresentation of its safety protocols.

Roblox CEO David Baszucki mentioned that the platform implemented over 100 new safety features last year. The company prohibits the sharing of video and images among its users and emphasizes reliance on both AI and human moderators to safeguard personal information. Collaboration with law enforcement and organizations like the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children remains a priority.

Roblox’s recent safety initiatives include requiring age verification to access chat features for users. For users under the age of nine, chat options are disabled by default to provide an additional layer of protection.
