Australian Team Criticizes Referee After Loss to U.S.

The Australian national soccer team faced controversy after their 2-0 defeat to the U.S. in the World Cup, chiefly criticizing referee Felix Zwayer’s performance. Key players and coaches voiced dissatisfaction over the officiating.

Player Remarks

Forward Nestory Irankunda expressed frustration with Zwayer’s decision-making, suggesting that calls heavily favored the U.S. team. After the match, he commented, “The referee was having a poor day today, favoring every call for the USA. There’s a need for balance in decisions when two teams are on the field.”

Irankunda’s statements were supported by other team members and coaches. Australia’s manager, Tony Popovic, echoed this sentiment, stating that the game was not the best day for the referee and emphasizing an imbalanced call distribution.

Controversial Goal

One particular incident involved a disputed goal by the U.S. during the 43rd minute of the match. Originally ruled offside, the decision was overturned after a VAR review deemed the goal valid. This decision raised concerns among the Australian players and coaching staff, who believed the U.S. gained an unfair advantage.

Popovic questioned the ruling and highlighted the challenge of overturning such critical calls. Assistant coach Paul Okon suggested their goalkeeper, Patrick Beach, was hindered during the play, although VAR concluded otherwise.

Match Outcome and Referee Issues

The first U.S. goal was attributed to an own goal by Australia’s Cameron Burgess early in the 11th minute. Popovic didn’t solely blame the officiating, admitting to the sluggish performance of his players. He praised the Americans for their assertiveness in winning duels and second balls.

Towards the end of the match, referee Zwayer suffered a cramp, requiring attention from players from both teams. Despite their challenges, Australia’s current standing is second in the group, trailing the U.S. with three points.
