The Atlanta Falcons have made a pivotal decision regarding their quarterback lineup. Tua Tagovailoa has been named the starter for Week 1 as Michael Penix Jr. recovers from a partially torn ACL sustained in Week 11 of the previous season against the Carolina Panthers. The Falcons are cautious with Penix’s recovery, opting to give Tagovailoa the starting role.
Tagovailoa becomes the sixth quarterback to start Week 1 for the Falcons in recent years. Matt Ryan held this position in 2021 before moving to the Indianapolis Colts. The Falcons experimented with Marcus Mariota in 2022 and Desmond Ridder in 2023. In 2024, Kirk Cousins took the starting role, followed by Penix in 2025.
The offseason brought significant changes for the Falcons. They dismissed head coach Raheem Morris and appointed Kevin Stefanski, who was previously with the Cleveland Browns. Tagovailoa joined the team after parting ways with the Miami Dolphins.
Stefanski expressed confidence in Tagovailoa, encouraging him to challenge doubters. “Proving skeptics wrong is crucial,” Stefanski stated on the team’s website. “This isn’t the expected path, but it’s a chance to respond and show strength.” Tagovailoa has a track record of resilience from his college days.
In the past, Tagovailoa has struggled with injuries, completing at least 16 games in only the 2023 season. That year, he achieved Pro Bowler status by leading the Dolphins to an 11-6 finish and a playoff appearance. Last season, his performance included 2,660 passing yards, 20 touchdowns, and 15 interceptions over 14 games.
The NFC South remains unpredictable, offering the Falcons a potential advantage. The Panthers clinched the division with an 8-9 record last year. Previously, the Buccaneers dominated from 2021 to 2024, and the Saints from 2017 to 2020. The Falcons last won the division in 2016, the same year they went to the Super Bowl.
Atlanta will start their season on Sunday against the Pittsburgh Steelers. This game sets the stage for Tagovailoa to demonstrate his capabilities as the Falcons’ leading quarterback.
