As interest in ibogaine grows, Americans are spending up to $20,000 on treatment retreats despite the potential dangers associated with this psychedelic. According to the New York Post, executives, entrepreneurs, and professionals are seeking mental resets and addiction treatments in countries like Mexico.
Ibogaine Clinics Abroad
In Playa del Carmen, the Ibogaine Clinic provides services to coordinate airport transfers, accommodations, and other travel plans for its patients. Meanwhile, Beond Ibogaine in CancĂșn offers programs that include medical supervision, lodging, yoga, meditation, and massage, aiming to create a comprehensive treatment experience.
Due to the unavailability of ibogaine for medical use in the U.S., many Americans travel to Mexico for treatment. Countries in Latin America, such as Costa Rica, are also becoming popular for psychedelic retreats focused on wellness and recovery.
Public Attention and Concerns
Renewed interest in ibogaine followed the death of Presley Gerber, Cindy Crawford’s son, who sought an ‘ibogaine flood’ treatment in Mexico while dealing with addiction. Although Gerber openly discussed using ibogaine to ‘rewire’ his brain, addiction specialist Dr. Drew Pinsky warns against viewing it or other psychedelics as cures for substance use disorders. He noted, ‘I’ve had patients using ibogaine or ayahuasca for decades, and there’s nothing magic about it.’
While some seek relief from addiction, others are drawn to ibogaine for performance boosts, burnout recovery, and new perspectives. Beond offers stays ranging from $12,500 to $20,000 for health optimization services.
Ibogaine’s Broad Appeal
Clinics market ibogaine beyond addiction treatment as a tool for personal growth and emotional healing. Mike Stratton, a health company co-founder, turned to ibogaine for a ‘reset’ after struggling with health and personal challenges due to his work schedule.
His ‘flood’ treatment was intense, with memories and thoughts surfacing during the experience. Stratton described it as a ‘hell ride.’
Treatment prices vary from $5,000 to $20,000, excluding travel costs. Medical monitoring during treatment is crucial due to ibogaine’s effects on the heart and potential fatal cardiac complications.
Varied Facilities
The risks of ibogaine treatments grow when medical screening, emergency preparedness, and follow-up care differ among facilities. The New York Times identified around 40 clinics and wellness centers in Mexico offering ibogaine, contrasting sharply with the almost none available a decade ago. While some facilities provide luxury settings and credentialed staff, others operate in more basic conditions.
