American Airlines announced the suspension of six North American routes in response to increased jet fuel prices caused by the ongoing conflict in Iran. Four routes affected are nonstop flights from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), while the other two originate from Charlotte Douglas International Airport in North Carolina.

The airline’s decision stems from the volatile oil market influenced by the Middle Eastern conflict, which has significantly impacted air travel this year. As fuel costs rise, airlines like American are adjusting schedules and prices, affecting travelers broadly. American Airlines shared with the Associated Press that its jet fuel expenses are projected to soar by more than $4 billion this year, based on information from Reuters.

Routes Temporarily Halted

According to American Airlines, the suspended routes include flights from Los Angeles (LAX) to Cleveland (CLE), Columbus (CMH), Pittsburgh (PIT), and Washington Dulles (IAD). Additionally, flights between Charlotte (CLT) and Ontario (ONT), as well as Charlotte and Sacramento (SMF), are suspended. These changes will take effect from August 5 to October 5.

Travelers affected by these suspensions will receive alternate travel options or refunds according to the company’s policy. For those traveling from LAX to a city with suspended service, connections may be required, but the airline assures continued service.

American Airlines clarified, “American has seasonally adjusted service on select routes in August and September to refine capacity growth for 2026.” The statement emphasized that no routes are indefinitely suspended, and the carrier remains committed to maintaining a comprehensive network.

Other airlines, including Norse Atlantic Airways, have similarly reduced routes out of Los Angeles in response to surging fuel costs.
