Alec Baldwin is under heavy criticism for a “self-centered” tribute he posted for the late actor Sam Neill, who passed away on Monday. Baldwin’s Instagram video, which runs for nearly three minutes, mentions Neill in only the first 10 seconds and the last five seconds.

The video starts with Baldwin expressing his shock at Neill’s death. “I just wanted to come on here quickly and say, how stricken I was to learn of the death of Sam Neill,” he says.

When I did ‘The Hunt for Red October,’ we shot in ’89, it came out in 1990, a long time ago, Baldwin continued, referencing his time filming with Neill in the early days. He eventually mentioned Neill again at the end of the video and sent condolences to Neill’s family.

Baldwin’s followers quickly reacted, criticizing him for focusing too much on himself during the tribute. Comments included statements like, “I thought you were paying respects to Sam Neil. I didn’t realize it was all about you” and “I kept waiting to hear some good things regarding Sam Neill.” Others advised Baldwin to do better in his tribute.

Yet, some defended Baldwin, calling it a genuine tribute. Comments of support praised his calm and compassionate manner of speaking and expressed appreciation for his genuine and heartfelt posts.

Sam Neill passed away at the age of 78 after recovering from cancer. Tributes have since poured in describing him as both a talented performer and a beloved friend. Nicole Kidman called him “one of the greats” and shared that they had been friends since she was 18.

Toni Collette, who appeared with Neill in “A Long Way Down” and “Dirty Deeds,” also paid homage to him on Instagram. She described him as a “most beautiful, decent gentleman” and shared a heartfelt note alongside a throwback photo of them together.

Neill’s family announced his death with a statement emphasizing that he passed surrounded by family and had remained cancer-free. The dignity that marked his life also marked his passing.
