Alberto Carvalho Resigns Amid F.B.I. Investigation

Alberto Carvalho, the superintendent of the Los Angeles Unified School District, resigned on Sunday. This decision came months after his home and office were raided by the F.B.I. in connection with a criminal investigation involving a district deal with an A.I. start-up.

Carvalho was a prominent figure in education, taking on the role in 2021 to lead the nation’s second-largest school district. However, his tenure was marked by challenges, including the recent investigation.

Since February 27, Carvalho had been on paid leave. The board of education recommended this step to reduce the turmoil surrounding the investigation. Andres Chait, a veteran administrator, has been serving as the acting superintendent during this period.

The details of Carvalho’s resignation were made known through a letter sent to the district and school board members, with his exit being immediate. The Los Angeles Times initially reported his resignation.

Carvalho’s lawyers previously issued a statement defending his actions, asserting that he had not engaged in any wrongdoing. They emphasized that no evidence had been presented to support allegations of federal law violations.
