Junior running back Aiden Brunner embraced patience, knowing his turn for Jacobs would come. With Coach Brian Zimmerman’s focus on running, breaking into the starting lineup required waiting. “I knew I wouldn’t play right away,” Brunner remarked. “I had to wait and develop. I talked with ‘Zim’ about it. Now, it’s my chance.”
Brunner seized his opportunity in an incredible comeback, scoring two second-half touchdowns, including the decisive one with 1.8 seconds left. Jacobs overcame a 17-point gap to win 31-27 against Burlington Central in the Fox Valley Conference. Brunner accumulated 38 yards on 11 carries, with TDs of 1 and 8 yards.
Austin Stennett fueled the comeback, completing 19 of 31 passes for 263 yards. His highlight moment was a 74-yard touchdown to Owen Crouch, who ended with five catches for 111 yards. Chris Williams contributed seven catches for 59 yards and an 8-yard touchdown on a reverse play. Jordan Hudson grabbed five catches for 75 yards.
For Burlington Central, Reece Beemer completed 14 of 30 passes for 112 yards and a touchdown. His 10-yard TD run late in the fourth quarter handed the Rockets a 27-24 lead. Parker Auxier added 126 yards and two touchdowns on 24 carries.
Jacobs faced challenges running the ball this season, but Stennett’s quarterback development helped fill the gap. Zimmerman expressed satisfaction with Brunner’s second-half performance. “He’s been waiting,” Zimmerman noted. “It was his turn to take the reins. We hold a tradition of running the ball. “We’ve been dissatisfied with our running, but Austin has made big plays.”
After Burlington Central’s late lead, Jacobs mobilized for another rally. Stennett propelled the Golden Eagles, paving the way for Brunner’s winning TD. “We knew our strength, so we decided to run through them,” Brunner stated. “The line moved down, and I saw the gap. It was great. The work of recent years paid off.”
The Rockets led 20-3 after Beemer’s 7-yard TD pass to Chace Chesney, but Stennett’s 74-yard TD pass soon ignited the comeback. Following a fourth defensive stop, Jacobs advanced 71 yards in five plays, culminating in Brunner’s 8-yard TD to shrink the deficit to 20-17. Williams’ 8-yard TD flipped the lead to Jacobs.
Burlington Central coach Brian Iossi reflected on missed red zone chances ending in turnovers. “Honestly, we lost in the second quarter with three inside-the-20 turnovers,” Iossi said. “We need to complete those, but I’m proud of them.” He claimed the game as one of the year’s best.
Jacobs’ coaches had clear pre-game advice: “This is a game you’ll remember for life,” Brunner recalled. That foresight proved accurate. “I’ve never seen anything like it,” Brunner shared.
